The Challenge : Hike to the summit of 3 of Sligo’s most iconic peaks in one day

Your challenge day begins at the Riverside Hotel, Sligo where sign in and our safety briefing takes place. All Hikers will depart from the hotel by coach. Sign in’ from 7am. Depart hotel at 7.30am Expected return time to hotel: 6.30pm

Peak 1 : Benbulben
Benbuben is by far the most recognizable mountain in Sligo and perhaps all over Ireland. The coach delivers us to our start point a brief 20 minutes from the hotel. The route to the summit takes us through a tranquil blanket bog valley before climbing to the main plateau of the mountain range and onward to the summit. Views in every direction are simply breathtaking. This peak is expected to take between 3 and 4 hours. Lunch is provided upon our return to the coach pick up point where our team will have freshly made sandwiches and tea/coffee ready to refresh the group before peak 2.

Peak 2 : Knocknarea
Stepped in thousands of years of human history and folklore, Knocknarea see’s more visitors each year than any other Sligo hill. We climb this icon from the south side and arrive on the summit to pay homage to Queen Maeve, reputed to be buried here under the giant cairn that sits atop the mountain. The views over Sligo bay and city are the best in the county and our descent takes us down the stairway with stunning views of Strandhill and the Coolera peninsula. Snack provided at finish and a service station sits beside our collection point in Strandhill where a short 15 minute break will be available to anyone requiring toilet breaks or a shop visit.

Peak 3 : Knocknashee
Nestled away in south Sligo sits Knocknashee, often overshadowed by its elder siblings in the north of
the county Knocknashee holds it own claim to Sligo’s history with the discovery of ancient human settlements that once sat upon it’s summit. In fact the entire top of Knocknashee is surrounded by an accent rampart that at one time enclosed and protected these buildings and tombs. Our route takes us from an old Abbey ruin towards the hill where we climb a moderate but short section toward the rampart and to the flat summit plateau. Upon reaching he summit cairn we will hear the fabulous story of Knocknashee’s past from a local archeologist as we take in the tranquil 360-degree view.
